Cat in a Leopard Spot by Carole Nelson Douglas When the Masked Conjurer’s performing leopard Osiris is stolen, Midnight Louie and daughter goes on the case to find the missing big cat. The search brings him to a canned hunt ranch, where wealthy clients go to bag big game while on vacationing in Las Vegas. Quite obviously someone has desired to add a leopard to his trophy wall, but whom? And why is Osiris being starved and treated badly? Max is also enlisted to help in the hunt for the missing creature, and his investigations turn up more than just slaughter for money. Something sinister is going on at the ranch and Max cannot let it be. He gets Temple to help him out in his sleuthing and she almost becomes a victim when the owner of the ranch is found mauled to death by a leopard. Poor Osiris is now a murder suspect but no one can figure how or why this particular animal managed the crime. Midnight Louise does a good deed and everyone reaps the rewards in unexpected ways. Max cannot shake the feeling that this is all connected to his violent past and that his friends are being exposed to more and more danger through him. He still has not confessed all his secrets to anyone, not even Temple. Both Matt and Molina share other bits and pieces of the puzzle but no one has yet been able to put them all together. Romance continually complicates matters and every one of the characters is keeping at least one secret from the rest. Taken all together, they might help unravel the web of dangerous deceit but no one is trusting enough to reveal everything as yet. The cats know more than anyone, but they cannot tell.
